Pipe Insulation in Boulder City and Southern Nevada

Out here the sun cooks exposed pipe all summer, then a cold snap comes through and freezes it. We wrap it so it holds up to both.

The Short Version

The Dam Plumber insulates exposed water pipes for homes and businesses in Boulder City, Henderson, Las Vegas and northwest Arizona. We wrap the pipes at your main, the risers and runs outside the house, and hot water lines, so the summer heat and winter cold snaps don't turn into a leak. It's usually a quick job, and you get the price before we start.

Why Pipe Insulation Matters in the Desert

People think freezing pipes are a problem for somewhere else. But Boulder City and the valley get cold snaps, and when the overnight low drops below freezing, water in exposed pipe can freeze, expand and split the pipe. You find out when it thaws and starts spraying.

The heat is hard on pipe too. Full sun all summer breaks down old foam until it crumbles off and leaves the pipe bare. It gets hot, there's water leaks. It gets cold, there's water leaks. Good insulation helps with both.

When a hard freeze is in the forecast, a few simple things help: let a faucet drip overnight, open the cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls, and know where your main shut-off is. Insulation does the rest, so you're not out there at midnight with a towel and a hair dryer.

Pipe Insulation for Exposed Pipes Outside

The pipes that need it most are the ones out in the open. We'll walk around with you, point out what's exposed, and tell you what's worth wrapping and what isn't.

Outdoor pipe needs insulation that can stand up to the sun, not thin foam that falls apart after a summer or two. We use the right material for where the pipe is and seal the seams so water can't get in behind it.

Where we stop

We work on the main water supply up to the vacuum breaker. Sprinkler valves and irrigation lines past that point go to a landscaper.

  • The main water line where it comes up out of the ground
  • Above-ground risers and the shut-off valve at the main
  • Pressure-reducing valves and water filters mounted outside
  • Pipe runs on exterior walls, in unheated garages and in attics
  • Water heater and recirculation lines in the garage

Insulating Hot Water Lines

Hot water pipe loses heat as it travels. Wrapping it keeps more of that heat in the line, so hot water gets to the tap a little faster and your water heater isn't working as hard.

If you've got a recirculation pump, insulating the loop matters even more, since that water is moving through the pipe all the time. We can look at the whole setup while we're there. See our water heater and water lines and main water systems pages for more.

Pipe Insulation for Commercial Buildings

Rooftop water heaters, exposed risers and piping on the outside of commercial buildings take the worst of the weather. We came out of commercial plumbing before we started The Dam Plumber, so we know what these systems go through. See our commercial plumbing page for more.

Already got a split pipe from a freeze? That's a repair first, not an insulation job. Call us and we'll fix the leak, then wrap the pipe so it doesn't happen again. If it's after hours, we run 24/7 emergency service. We give you the after-hours rate on the phone before we head out.

Most insulation jobs are quick. We show up, give you a price, knock it out, and you check it over before we go. We're not going to walk your house looking for extra things to sell you. If we spot something that's actually a problem, we'll mention it. Otherwise, we're done.

Common Questions

Pipe Insulation FAQs

Straight answers to what people ask us most about pipe insulation.

Do pipes really freeze in Boulder City?

They can. We get cold snaps where it drops below freezing overnight, and exposed pipe outside, in the garage or in the attic is what freezes first.

Which pipes should be insulated?

Anything exposed to the weather: the main line where it comes out of the ground, above-ground risers, outside valves and filters, and pipe in unheated spaces. Hot water lines are worth wrapping too.

Do you insulate sprinkler lines?

No. We work on the main water supply up to the vacuum breaker. Irrigation valves and sprinkler lines past that point go to a landscaper.

How much does pipe insulation cost?

It depends on how much pipe there is and where it runs. You'll get an upfront price before we start, and it doesn't change once we're working.

Do you warranty the work?

Yes. Workmanship is warrantied for one year in Nevada and two years in Arizona, per each state's rules.
