The Short Version

What Drain Pipe Descaling Is and Why Cast Iron Needs It

Cast-iron drains were standard in a lot of older homes, and plenty of them are still in service around Boulder City. Over the years the inside of the pipe rusts and builds up a rough crust of scale. Hard water, grease and soap stick to that crust, and the opening gets smaller and smaller.

Descaling means cutting that buildup off the inside wall of the pipe and flushing it out, so the drain has its full opening back. It's not the same as clearing a clog. A regular drain cleaning punches a hole through a stoppage. Descaling goes after the crust that keeps causing the stoppages.

If you want the longer version of why cast iron gives out, we wrote it up here: why cast iron drains fail in older homes.

How We Do Drain Pipe Descaling

We work the line with the cable machine to cut the scale loose, and bring in the hydro jetter when the line needs to be flushed clean. Which tools get used depends on the pipe, and we'll tell you why.

Then we look at it. A camera inspection after descaling shows the actual pipe wall, not the crust sitting on top of it. That's when you find out if the cast iron is still solid or if it's thin, cracked or rusted through on the bottom.

We'll show you the footage and walk you through it. You don't have to take our word for what's down there.

Descaling or Replacing: What We'd Do if It Was Our House

Descaling makes sense when the pipe is still sound and the problem is what's built up inside it. It's a lot less money than tearing out a drain line, and for a lot of older homes it's the right call. It's also something you can do again down the road if the scale builds back up.

It doesn't fix a pipe that's already cracked or has holes in it. Descaling a pipe that's rotted through just cleans the rust off the hole. If that's what the camera shows, we'll tell you, and we'll give you options for a drain repair: replace just the bad section, or a longer run if more of it is on the way out.

We don't line pipes. When a section is gone, we cut it out and put in new pipe. Where the old line is cast iron, that usually means cutting at a bell and tying new pipe into what's still good.

Either way, we'll lay the options out, tell you which ones are a good idea and which aren't, and let you pick.

Drain Pipe Descaling for Older Homes on a Budget

Older homes around here are full of cast iron, and replacing every drain in the house isn't always the right call. If the pipe still has life in it, it shouldn't have to come out. Descaling is often the option that keeps the house working without a big bill.

You get the price up front, and if the job gets harder once we're in it, it's still the same price. Nobody here works on commission, so we're not going to push a replacement you don't need. Veterans get 15% off, and members of the Boulder City senior center get a discount too. See our coupons page for current offers.

When the job's done, you run the water and make sure everything drains the way it should before we leave. The work is covered by our workmanship warranty: one year in Nevada, two years in Arizona.

Common Questions

Drain & Pipe Descaling FAQs

Straight answers to what people ask us most about descaling drain pipes.

What's the difference between drain cleaning and descaling?

Drain cleaning clears a clog so water can get through. Descaling cuts off the rust and scale built up on the inside of the pipe, so the drain has its full opening back.

Is descaling worth it on old cast iron?

If the pipe is still solid, often yes. It costs a lot less than replacing the line. If the camera shows the pipe is cracked or rotted through, we'll tell you descaling isn't worth your money.

Will you know if my pipe needs to be replaced?

Yes. Once the scale is off, we can see the actual pipe wall on camera. That shows whether it's sound or it's time for a repair.

How much does descaling cost?

It depends on the length and condition of the line. You get the price up front before we start, and if the job gets harder, it's still the same price.

Do you warranty the work?

Yes. Workmanship is warrantied for one year in Nevada and two years in Arizona, per each state's rules.
