The Short Version
The Dam Plumber finds hidden water leaks in homes and businesses across Boulder City, Henderson, Las Vegas and northwest Arizona. We narrow down where the water is going before we cut into a wall, a floor or the yard. Once we've found it, you get your options and an upfront price for the leak repair, and that price doesn't change if the job gets harder.
Why Leak Detection Comes Before Leak Repair
Water travels. It runs down a pipe, along a stud or under a slab before it shows up as a stain or a puddle. If you start cutting where the water shows, you can end up with a lot of holes and no leak.
So we find it first. That saves you drywall, flooring and money, and it means the repair price we give you is for the real problem, not a guess.

How We Handle Leak Detection
Most of it is good plumbing sense and a process of elimination. Nothing fancy, just working through the system until the leak has nowhere left to hide. We explain what we're checking as we go, so you're not left wondering.
Check the meter
With every fixture off, the meter shouldn't move. If it does, there's a leak somewhere between the meter and your faucets.
Split the system up
We shut off sections and see which one is losing water. That tells us whether it's the line from the street, a line under the slab, or something inside the house.
Look at the fixtures and the obvious stuff
Toilets that run, water heater relief valves, supply lines under sinks. Plenty of mystery leaks end up being something simple, and we'd rather tell you that than sell you a big job.
Drain leaks
If the water smells or shows up after you flush or run the tub, it may be a drain, not a water line. We can run a sewer camera down the line so you can see the problem yourself. Older homes with cast iron are prone to this. Here's why cast iron drains fail.

Leak Detection for Slabs, Walls and Water Lines
A lot of houses around Boulder City and Henderson sit on a concrete slab with the water lines underneath. A warm spot on the floor, the sound of water running when nothing's on, or cracked tile can all point to a slab leak.
Outside, a leak in the line from the meter usually shows up as a soggy patch, a sunken spot, or grass that's greener in one strip than the rest of the yard. Inside, it's stains, bubbling paint, or a musty smell in one room. We work our way to it either way.
Once we know where it is, we'll tell you the options. Fix it where it is, reroute the line, or if the pipes are failing all over, talk about repiping. We'll say what we'd do if it was our house.

What to Do While You Wait for Leak Detection
If water is actively coming out, shut off the main valve to the house. If you don't know where yours is or it won't turn, that's worth fixing too. See our water shut-off valves page.
Wipe up what you can and move anything that shouldn't get wet. Take pictures of any damage and keep your water bills. If you're filing an insurance claim, that helps. If it's after hours and water is going everywhere, call us. We run 24/7 emergency service. We give you the after-hours rate before we head out, and we aim to be there within the hour.

A hidden leak doesn't fix itself, and the longer it runs, the more it costs you in water and damage. Finding it first is the cheapest way to deal with it.

Common Questions
Leak Detection FAQs
Straight answers to what people ask us most about finding leaks.
How can I check for a leak myself?
Turn off every faucet, the washer, the dishwasher and anything else that uses water, then look at your water meter. If it's still moving, you've got a leak somewhere. Call us and we'll track it down.
Will you have to tear open my walls or floor?
Only as much as we have to. The point of finding the leak first is so we cut one small opening in the right place instead of several in the wrong ones.
What does leak detection cost?
You get an upfront price before we start. Once we've found the leak, you get a separate upfront price for the repair, with options, and that price doesn't change if the job gets harder.
Could it be a drain leak instead of a water line?
Yes. If the water shows up after you use a fixture, or it smells, it's likely a drain. We can put a camera in the line so you can see it for yourself.
Do you warranty the repair once you find the leak?
Yes. Workmanship is warrantied for one year in Nevada and two years in Arizona, per each state's rules.
