Why Cast Iron Drains Fail in Older Homes (and What Your Options Are)
September 21, 2026

Cast iron drain pipe was built to last, and for a long time it does. But it rusts from the inside out, and by the time you notice a problem the pipe has usually been going bad for years. We cut out a lot of it. Here's what we see, why it fails, and what you can do about it without anybody pushing you into the most expensive option.
How cast iron fails
Water and waste run through a drain line every day. Over the years the inside of cast iron pipe rusts and scales up. That scale narrows the pipe, catches paper and grease, and turns into a clog that keeps coming back.
Eventually the bottom of the pipe, where the water sits, rusts thin. That's when you get cracks, pinholes, and sometimes an actual hole you can put a finger through. Under a house, that means waste leaking into the crawlspace or under the slab.

Signs your cast iron is going
The same drain clogging over and over. A sewer smell you can't track down. Slow drains all over the house. Rust-colored stains or damp spots where the pipe runs. If you've got an older home and you're seeing any of that, it's worth a look before it turns into a mess.
The best way to know for sure is a sewer camera inspection. We run a camera down the line and you see exactly what we see.
Your options, honestly
There isn't one right answer. It depends on how bad the pipe is, where it is, and what you want to spend.
If the pipe is scaled up but still solid, descaling can cut the buildup out and get it flowing again. If one section is cracked or rotted through, we can cut that section out and put in new pipe. If the whole run is shot, replacing it is the fix that lasts.
A full repipe isn't the right call for every house or every budget. We'll lay out every option, tell you which ones are a good idea and which aren't, and tell you what we'd do if it was our house. Then you pick.

What a repair looks like
Most cast iron repairs mean getting to the pipe, whether that's through a crawlspace, a wall, or cutting the slab. We cut out the bad pipe and tie new pipe into what's still good. If there's water running nearby, we cap it off properly with real caps.
You get the price before we start, and if it goes south once we open it up, it's still the same price. Need it fixed? Call us at 725-254-0089 or send a request. If it's a sewer line problem, see our sewer repair page.
Quick Answers
How long does cast iron drain pipe last?
It depends on the water, how the line's been used and how it was installed. What matters more than age is its condition, and a camera inspection tells you that.
Can you fix just part of a cast iron line?
Yes. If only one section is bad, we can cut it out and replace just that piece.
Do you do pipe lining?
No. We don't do pipe lining or epoxy. When cast iron needs fixing, we descale it or cut out the bad section and replace it with new pipe.
